Transforming Romania into a Hub for Semiconductor R&D: Building the Largest Chip R&D Center in South East Europe
Infineon, present in Romania since 2005, has seen a substantial growth during the last 5 years. Entire families of Infineon chips are developed here from idea to market readiness. In 2025 we can say with confidence that most of the cars on the road today have chips developed in Romania in various safety, drivetrain or comfort functions.
As the strongest semiconductor company in Romania with full product lifecycle development capability, Infineon Romania is driving technological advancements and innovation in the region.
Turnover and growth
Infineon Romania has experienced significant growth since its establishment in 2005, expanding its presence to four major cities: Bucharest, Iasi, Brasov and Cluj. This strategic presence has enabled the company to tap into the region’s talent pool and leverage local expertise to drive innovation. The company now has a turnover in Romania of approx.. 60 mln. EUR, solidifying its position as a major player in the semiconductor industry.
Number of employees and expansion
Infineon Romania has four locations: Bucharest, Iasi, Brasov and Cluj. In total, the company has over 650 R&D engineers in the country.
From 2022, Infineon Romania went through several important expansions.
First, in 2022, Infineon Romania acquired NoBug, a privately-owned engineering company providing verification and design services for all the digital functionalities of semiconductor products. This acquisition bolstered Infineon Romania as a growth location for R&D in Europe.
In 2023, Infineon Romania, after years of collaboration with the Technical University from Iasi, opened in Iasi its first office outside Bucharest.
Although economic growth started to slow, one year later, in 2024, Infineon Romania continued its expansion with the opening of its third office in Brasov. With this new office, Infineon Romania created new job opportunities, strengthened the activities with the university and also contributed to the growth of Romania’s technology sector.
In 2025, when most companies were slowing or scaling back, Infineon growth in Romania continued with the decision to open in Cluj-Napoca the fourth office in Romania.
After these major expansions, Infineon Romania had grown in size, from 300 to 650 engineers. R&D departments in Romania had competence center status and could cover the full development lifecycle of semiconductor chips. The decision to grow not just in scale but also in deep competence, including strong local management, proved to be a winning strategy.
To continue on this path, a major project was also in the works for Bucharest, the main Infineon location in Romania. In 2024, it was announced that work would begin on what will be the largest semiconductor R&D center in Southeast Europe. Work on this project is fully under way with a move date set for 2026.
Major investment over 20 years in education for microelectronics
Over the last 20 years, Infineon Romania has demonstrated a strong dedication to fostering a culture of innovation and collaboration with the academic community. The company has established robust relationships with several prestigious technical universities in Romania, including the University Politehnica of Bucharest, Gheorghe Asachi Technical University of Iasi and Technical University of Cluj-Napoca. Through these partnerships, Infineon Romania aims to promote education and research in the field of microelectronics. Over the years, the activities grew to now include Infineon sponsored labs, collaboration on curricula, summer practice program, internships and PhD scholarships, joint R&D projects and sponsoring academic events and competitions for students.

Infineon Romania has been at the forefront of driving innovation, with a focus on R&D projects that enable safer, more efficient, autonomous and environmentally friendly cars. Teams in Romania have full ownership or a strong contribution to major automotive semiconductor R&D projects with applications in motor controls, sensors, power conversion, memories, security and communications.
Drive, vision, and ability to overcome challenges
With a long-term vision of making Infineon Romania the strongest semiconductor company in the country and carefully executed plans, the company has managed to grow even during times of global economic slow-down. Even during the Great Recession, pandemic crisis or current economic slow-down, Infineon in Romania kept growing. Leveraging the local potential and highly educated workforce Infineon Romania has been able to convince key internal stakeholders to grow the role of local teams in very successful semiconductor product families.
Environmental awareness and sustainability
Infineon Romania’s commitment to environmental awareness and sustainability is evident in its new R&D center in Bucharest. The facility incorporates the highest standards in efficiency and sustainability, utilizing a state-of-the-art geothermal exchange system for heating and cooling, and pursuing LEED Platinum certification. The rooftop will be equipped with solar panels and heat recovery units to maximize efficiency.
Semiconductor products developed in Romania are cutting edge when it comes to power usage and bring a significant contribution to reducing energy consumption.
Largest semiconductor R&D center in South-East Europe
Infineon Romania’s new headquarter in Bucharest will be the largest semiconductor R&D center in South-East Europe. This will be a unique facility, custom designed to function as a semiconductor R&D center that covers all aspects of chip development.
This new sustainable development center, equipped with leading-edge lab infrastructure, will enable the teams to push the boundaries of semiconductor technology and drive advancements in their respective fields.
In over 20 years of growth, the success of Infineon in Romania is unmatched by any other high-tech hardware company in the country. It brings high -skill jobs and wide-reaching competences to the local labor market.
